Who was Atatürk?
Atatürk was known throughout the Ottoman Empire for his military heroism and leadership of democratic organizations. Together these gave him the political authority to lead. Because of Atatürk’s immense impact on Turkish history, he is commemorated by an annual minute of national silence on the day of his death (November 10, 1938). Ataturk has become a national symbol of hope and democratic success around Turkey.
